Live at Mind Cambridge

We were thrilled to host a live performance by local guitarist and singer-songwriter Ben B-Brown at the Mind Cambridge shop, on Time To Talk Day.

This national campaign, run by Mind, the national charity, focussed on ‘braving the big talk this year’, and having conversations about mental health experiences that might still feel a bit unspoken.

“We’ve made great progress in destigmatising mental health problems and improving attitudes. But we need to keep going. There are still times when what we are living through can feel really big and difficult to talk about. Time to Talk Day is a day for all of us to come together to talk, listen and change lives.

Talking openly and honestly can be the first step towards better mental health for everyone. It can even save lives. It can reduce stigma and help people feel comfortable enough to seek help when they need it.”

At Mind Cambridge we planned some colourful window dressing to open up the conversation between staff, volunteers and visitors to the shop. We provided coloured paper, scissors and pens, encouraging people to pick a colour and cut out a shape of their choice, sharing some resonant words about mental health.

Ben’s performance was definitely the highlight. His thoughtful and thought-provoking self-penned songs were pitch perfect, combining catchy melodies with meaningful lyrics. They set the mood for the day, beautifully delivered with a calm confidence that set everyone at ease.

Go to your Happy Place. A walk outside will always help as will a focus on simple pleasures, a cup of tea, some music, and sharing your feelings

Visit our YouTube channel to view Ben playing ‘All I Need’, one of his own compositions. We love the focus on the small things – so important when life feels overwhelming. One day at a time, one hour, one minute if needs be.

Some of the songs touched on Ben’s own struggles with mental health, highlighting the issues that men in particular sometimes face. He talked openly during his set, emphasising the importance of communicating with friends, loved ones and even strangers, seeking professional help and support at difficult moments. This is critical in times of crisis, when negative thoughts or confusion become overwhelming. Reaching out is the first big step – take it today!

One of Ben’s next creative challenges is the Cambridge Band Competition, organised by the legendary Strawberry Fair team – join us in wishing him all the best. Follow his progress on Instagram if you can.

Share some of the messages posted up in the shop window, tagging Mind Cambridge and The Fine Line Project, and don’t forget, while Time To Talk Day is an annual reminder to reach out, make sure you take time to talk about mental health every day. Take care of yourself and take care of others.

With special thanks to Ben for giving up his lunch break to join us; to Laila, Ale, Saba and Tintin in the Mind Cambridge shop; as well as Will Hill and Cambridge Printing.com for the event poster design and printing.
